Is this a good reason why "too many 'friends'" can be counterproductive?

Say you decided to go on an insane weight-loss diet. And you intended on telling no one (your little secret). And as the weeks and months go by, people start to notice that your clothes don't fit you anymore, and you're awfully more lankier than usual. People (or 'friends') start to talk, then eventually start questioning you. You act oblivious "What? Nooo, I've never felt better! Of course I eat! I just had a Big Mac!". But then a few more months go by, and now you look like Christian Bale from that movie The Machinist, and now people suspect that you're dying. Someone (a 'friend') decides to move in and take action. The cops come to your job, and the men in white lab coats follow. "You've been declared a risk/danger to your own self, and due to a growing concern by the people who know you, you're being taken for a 48 hour psychiatric evaluation until a licensed psychiatrist declares you sane and healthy."
